Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis after treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria.

چکیده
Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an acute demyelinating disease occurring 1–3 wk after viral infection or vaccination1,2. Although most patients with ADEM make a full recovery, corticosteroids can be of help in severe cases. Generally, the diagnosis of ADEM is made by clinical history, neurological manifestations and magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the central nervous system. Neurological manifestations can occur both during and after malarial infection, particularly Plasmodium falciparum infection. These are infrequently encountered in P. vivax though post-malaria neurological syndrome (PMNS) has been reported from India3. ADEM has not been recognized as a common neurological complication of malaria. To the best of our knowledge only one case of ADEM following treatment of P. vivax malaria has been reported in literature4.

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in a Child Following Plasmodium vivax Malaria.
Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a multifocal, monophasic, acute demyelinating disease of the brain and spinal cord, which is commonly preceded by viral infections and occasionally bacterial infections or immunizations. Its occurrence following malarial infection, especially Plasmodium vivax Malaria is very uncommon. We report an 11-year girl who presented with clinical features o...
متن کاملVivax malaria presenting with myelitis: a rare complication.
Neurological complications may occur with the Plasmodium falciparum infection. However, the association of neurological manifestations with vivax malaria remains doubtful. Of late, there are isolated case reports/studies which have implicated P. vivax in the pathogenesis of severe malaria which is characterized by the features of different organ dysfunctions, which were previously thought to be...
متن کاملAcute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis After Plasmodium Vivax Infection: Case Report and Review of Literature
Acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) usually occurs after viral infections or vaccination. Its occurrence after Plasmodium vivax infection is extremely uncommon. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who had choreo-athetoid movements and ataxia after recovery from P.vivax infection. Diagnosis of ADEM was made on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging findings. The child responded to...

OBJECTIVES To analyze incidence, clinical feature and outcome of acute renal failure due to Plasmodium vivax malaria. MATERIAL & METHOD This is retrospective analysis of smear positive Plasmodium vivax patients with acute renal failure between Jan 1995 to Dec 2000. RESULT Out of 577 cases of ARF, 93 [falciparum 74 (79.61%); vivax 19 (20.4%)] were related to complicated malaria. 3.2% (19/577...
متن کاملAcute disseminated encephalomyelitis following Plasmodium falciparum malaria caused by varicella zoster virus reactivation.
Neurologic complications in the course of Plasmodium falciparum infections are commonly diagnosed as cerebral malaria, but bacterial or viral meningitis may exhibit similar symptoms. One to three weeks after P. falciparum malaria, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) can also mimick the symptoms of cerebral malaria. We describe a 31-year-old woman with life-threatening ADEM five days aft...
